OECD 201 algal studies are available for DMATO and Busperse 2422, which contains DMATO at 15%.
In the OECD 201 study for DMATO Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to the water accommodating fraction (WAF) of the substance due to its low solubility and complex nature. After 72 hours exposure the EL50 for growth rate was determined to be >32 mg/L and the NOEC was determined to be 0.32 mg/L. As the toxicological effects could not be attributed to a single component or components within the mixture, the effect concentrations are given in terms of nominal concentrations of the test substance.
In the study conducted with Busperse 2422 the 72-h ErC50-value (72 h) was calculated to be 3.5 mg/L based on the fluorescence measurements. The NOEC was statistically determined to be 0.62 mg/L.
Although the EC50 value determined for Busperse 2422 is lower than that of DMATO, it is considered appropriate to use the higher value from the DMATO study as Busperse 2422 only contains DMATO at approximately 15% and as the study for DMATO is considered to be of a higher quality. As such it is considered more appropriate to use the values from the study conducted with pure DMATO for risk assessment purposes.
