Description of key information

A single study report is available.  The study was conducted using Sprague Dawley rats as the test species exposed to the test substance for a 13 week period via inhalation.

Leach, Hatoum, Zeiss and Garvin (1989) examined the immunological effects of Trimellitic Anhydride in Sprague Dawley rats following two weeks exposure via inhalation. The results of this long-term inhalation exposure indicated that sustained immunological tolerance resulted from the exposure. Although TMA-specific antibody was present in small amounts, continued challenges with TMA did not produce TMA lesions. In addition to this, there was no evidence of chronic lung disease such as fibrosis. Rats exposed for 13 weeks and allowed to recover for 3 weeks showed increased antibody titres but few lesions even after a challenge with the test substance. Rats exposed for 13 weeks and allowed to recover for 38 weeks had reduced but still significant antibody titres, however, non-lung lesions were noted even after challenge with Trimellitic Anhydride prior to termination.

These results indicated that rats became tolerant to TMA and that 13 weeks of exposure to TMA did not produce lesions of any type even after 38 weeks of recovery.
