Additional information

Cumene is a clear liquid with a odour of characteristic aromatic compounds.

The melting point of cumene is -96 °C, the boiling point is 152.7 °C. The density of cumene at 20°C is 0.86 g/cm3. The vapour pressure of cumene is 4.96 hP at 20 °C.

The partition coefficient of cumene is 3.55 (log Kow). The surface tension of cumene at 20 °C is 27.5 mN/m.

The flash point of cumene is determined by closed cup method for 31 °C to 39 °C, the self-ignition temperature of cumene is 424 °C. There is a hazard of explosion as vapour in mixture with air, but there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule. The lower explosion limit of cumene is 0.9 %, the upper explosion limit is 6.5%. Cumene itself is not regarded as an oxidising agent. Stability of cumene in organic solvents is not considered to be critical. The kinematic viscosity of cumene is reported to be 0.74 mm2/sec at 37.78 °C, while the dynamic viscosity at 40 °C is 0.76 mPa s.
