- In the autopsies, the lungs were of a bright red color, the liver was dark brown and it was full of blood when sectioned. The stomach was swollen and there were heavy blood infusions on the mucous membrane.

The acute oral LD50 of the test substance phosphorus pentachloride in the rat was determined to be 600 mg/kg bw under the conditions of this study. Signs of toxicity (depression, loss of coordination, apathy, lack of movement and ocular discharge) were observed. Cyanosis was apparent prior to death. Necropsy revealed bright red lungs, dark brown liver and haemorrhagic mucous membranes.
