Advice for firefighters

Protective equipment:

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Wear full protective suit.

Additional information

Collect contaminated fire fighting water separately. It

Cool endangered containers with water spray jet.

Damp down gases/fumes/haze with water spray jet.

Heating causes a rise in pressure, risk of bursting.

Container explosion may occur under fire conditions.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Put on breathing apparatus

Wear protective equipment. Keep unprotected persons away.

Keep away from sources of ignition.

Ensure adequate ventilation

Bring persons out of danger.

· Environmental precautions:

Do not allow to enter sewing systems, water bodies, groundwater or soil.

Inform respective authorities in case large quantities of the product reach water, sewage system or

soil.

· Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

Ensure adequate ventilation.

Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders).

Keep ignition sources away.

Clean up affected area.

May be recycled or disposed of in appropiate containers

Handling and storage

· Handling

· Precautions for safe handling

Keep containers tightly closed.

Prevent formation of aerosols.

Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace.

Ensure good interior ventilation, especially at floor level. (Fumes are heavier than air).

· Hygiene measures:

Keep away from foodstuffs, beverages and feedinggstuff.

Instantly remove any soiled and impregnated garments.

Wash hands during breaks and at the end of the work.

Do not inhale gases / fumes / aerosols.

Avoid contact with the eyes and skin.

Do not eat, drink or smoke while working.

Store protective clothing separately.

Clean skin thoroughly immediately after handling the product.

· Information about protection against explosions and fires:

Substance/product is flammable.

Fumes can combine with air to form an explosive mixture.

Fire fighting equipment must be available.

Protect from heat.

Keep ignition sources away - Do not smoke.

Protect against electrostatic charges.

Use only in explosion-proof area.

Use explosion-proof apparatus / fittings and spark-proof tools.

Flammable mixtures may be formed in empty containers.

· Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

· Storage

· Requirements to be met by storerooms and containers:

Store in cool location.

Store in original container if possible.

Unsuitable material: Metallic materials.

Do not use light alloy containers.

Unsuitable material: aluminium and aluminium alloy.

Provide solvent resistant, sealed floor.

Provide floor trough without outlet.

Prevent any penetration into the ground.

Suitable material: Steel or stainless steel.

Unsuitable material: Aluminium.

Unsuitable material: Light metals and their alloys.

· Information about storage in one common storage facility:

Store away from foodstuffs.

Do not store together with materials/products which can form dangerous chemical reactions.

See point 10: stability and reactivity.

· Further information about storage conditions:

Store in cool, dry conditions in well closed containers.

Protect from heat and direct sunlight.

Store container in a well ventilated position.

Protect from the effects of light.

Exposure controls / personal protection

· General protective measures:

The usual precautionary measures should be adhered to in handling the chemicals.

· Breathing equipment:

If used in closed systems or well-ventilated area breathing protection is not necessary.

Use breathing protection in case of insufficient ventilation.

In case of brief exposure or low pollution use breathing filter apparatus. In case of intensive

or longer exposure use breathing apparatus that is independent of circulating air.

Filter AX.

Filters may also be used one time.

· Protection of hands:

Chemical-protective gloves

The glove material has to be impermeable and resistant to the product/ the substance/ the preparation.

Check protective gloves prior to each use for their proper condition.

Selection of the glove material on consideration of the penetration times, rates of diffusion and the

degradation

Preventive skin protection by use of skin-protecting agents is recommended.

· Material of gloves

Full contact:

eg Fluorocarbon rubber (Viton)

Recommended thickness of the material: ≥ 0,7 mm

Splash contact:

eg Nitrile rubber, NBR

Recommended thickness of the material: ≥ 0,4 mm

Recommended thickness of the material: ≥ 0,7 mm

· Penetration time of glove material

Full contact.

Permeation time: > 480 min (8h) EN 374

Splash contact

Permeation time: max. 30 min.

The exact break trough time has to be found out by the manufacturer of the protective gloves and has

to be observed.

· Not suitable are gloves made of the following materials:

Strong gloves

Leather gloves

eg Natural rubber, NR

eg Chloroprene rubber, CR, PVC gloves

eg Nitrile rubber, NBR

Thickness of the material: < 0,4 mm

· Eye protection:

Chemical safety goggles.

· Body protection:

Solvent resistent protective clothing.

Antistatic protective clothing.

Flameproof protective clothing.

Apron, Boots, or suitable chemical protection suit.

Protective clothing should be selected specifically for the working place, depending on concentration and quantity of the hazardous substances handled. The resistance of the protective clothing to chemicals should be ascertained with the respective supplier.
