Description of key information

Bioelution results of TiC in four artificial body fluids and an in vitro dermal absorption study according to OECD 428 conducted with TiO2.

Bioelution results of TiC in four artificial body fluids have been conducted (Kirby Memorial Health Center, 2012). These data support read-across between TiO2and TiC. Only at very low pH values (gastric fluid, pH 1.5) the Ti-release from TiC is higher compared to TiO2, but still at a low level of 0.21% (2h). This difference is not considered to be relevant as TiO2did not elicit toxicity after oral application of 3.500 mg/kg/d in a 2-yr carcinogenicity study in rat (NCI 1979).

An in vitro dermal absorption study according to OECD 428 was conducted with TiO2(Gamer 2006). No dermal absorption of Ti ions has been reported.
