Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A secondary poisoning risk for birds by exposure with naphthalene through their diet can be excluded because naphthalene has no potential for bioaccumulation in pray animals like fish and earthworms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to Column 2 of REACH Annex X (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1,000 tonnes per year or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, any need for testing should be carefully considered taking into account the large mammalian data set usually available at this tonnage band. Furthermore, according to ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, performing a risk assessment for secondary poisoning, usually the exposure of birds is only considered for the fish and earthworm food chains.

A secondary poisoning risk for birds by exposure with naphthalene through their diet can be excluded because naphthalene has no potential for bioaccumulation in pray animals like fish and earthworms (see section 5.3 of the IUCLID dossier). Exposure of birds to naphthalene via the food chain or by direct uptake is highly unlikely under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use. Against this background, according to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and in accordance with ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment and ECHAs principle of avoiding unnecessary animal testing, performance of a study on toxicity of naphthalene is not necessary.
