Description of key information

Maleic acid is not classified for acute aquatic toxicity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
74.32 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
11.8 mg/L

Additional information

In key study with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata revealed an EC50 of 74.32 mg/l was reported with an non-neutralized test solution, based on algae growth-rate (Bopanna, 2010). pH adjusted test solution showed a decrease in effects. As a worst-case approach the EC50 estimated from non-neutralized samples was taken for further assessment.
