Photolysis is considered not applicable for the naturally occurring species of iron (U.K. Environment Agency, Johnson et al. 2007). Anyhow phototransformation of metal species rather than photolysis should be considered as environmentally reversible light-induced speciation rather than cleaving of chemical bounds are relevant for metals.

The literature search revealed no evidence for phototransformation of iron species in soils. Light may however to some extend influence the oxidation state and the speciation of iron as such information exists from water in the environment and in laboratory experiments (see section on phototransformation in water). Nonetheless it is assessed that these processes are not relevant due to the low light penetration of soils.
