1,1,1,2 -tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) is released only to the atmosphere during manufacture and use.

Due to the high Henry's law constant ( 10220 Pa.m3/mol) and the predicted low adsorption potential (log kow = 1.06), HFC 134a is expected to distribute mainly to the atmospheric compartment following emission to the environment.

Fugacity-based Multimedia Environmental Model Level III (2002) was used to estimate the partitioning of HFC 134a into the environment, under the assumption that 100% release occurs in air. The Level III model's results indicate that HFC 134a would partition mainly into the air compartment (99.93%) with 0.07% and 0.01% in the water and soil compartments respectively.
