Description of key information

The endpoint was covered using a key study. Zirconium sulfate did not show any adverse effects on activated sludge micro-organisms in the key study up to and including the highest dose tested, i.e. 1000 mg/L (expressed as anhydrous zirconium sulfate) (Roulstone, 2013).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In an activated sludge respiration inhibition study from Roulstone (2013) performed according to OECD guideline 209, no statistically significant toxic effects were observed at all of the test concentrations employed. These observations yielded a 3-h EC50 value of greater than 1000 mg a.i./L (the active ingredient being anhydrous zirconium sulfate). The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) after 3 hours of exposure was equal to or higher than 1000 mg a.i./L. Zirconium sulfate was therefore considered not toxic to micro-organisms at the doses tested.
