Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Carbon tetrachloride has a moderate potential for adsorption in soil, from the results of an experimental study (Koc about 115). An experimental determination of HLC has been carried out by Munz (1987), who determined H = 2370 Pa.m3/mol at 20°C. A supporting value of 2990 Pa.m3/mol at 25°C can be found in a handbook.

According to fugacity model level I, more than 99% of the substance will partition to the atmosphere (Thompson et al., 2004).

According to a fugacity model level III, at steady state, with default values, the partitioning is as follows (Epiwin V.4):

Volatilization from Water:

Henry LC: 0.0276 atm-m3/mole (Henry experimental database)

Half-Life from Model River:     1.292 hours

Half-Life from Model Lake :     118.1 hours  (4.92 days)

Removal In Wastewater Treatment:

Total removal:             91.57 percent

Total biodegradation:       0.03 percent

Total sludge adsorption:    2.02 percent

Total to Air:              89.51 percent

(using 10000 hr Bio P,A,S)

Level III Fugacity Model:

Mass Amount   Half-Life   Emissions

(percent)       (hr)      (kg/hr)

Air      49.4           1e+005      1000

Water    47.8           1.44e+003   1000

Soil     2.64           2.88e+003   1000

Sediment 0.196          1.3e+004    0

Persistence Time: 177 hr
