Description of key information

Calcium silicate showed a weak inhibitory effect on algal growth with EL10 values < 100 mg/L, and with EL50 >>100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
41 mg/L

Additional information

Aqueous extracts obtained from a calcium silicate produced weak inhibition of algal growth: EL10 = 33 and 41 mg/L for biomass production and growth rate, respectively, corresponding EL50 values ranged from 410 to >1000 mg/L. On the other hand, a structure-analogous sodium aluminum silicate did not show any toxicity: EL50 > 10,000 mg/L, NOELR = 10,000 mg/L (data not shown).

No significant toxicity towards algae - including the marine environment - is expected from exposure to synthetic amorphous calcium silicate (CS).
