Neither SnCl4 nor its hydrolysis product HCl induced mutations in in vitro test systems using bacteria but SnCl4 yielded positive results and HCl yielded both positive and negative results in Chromosomal aberration tests (OECD SIDS on Tin tetrachloride, SIAM 24, 2007 and Wallner (Bioservice) 2009). The positive results however are likely to be an artefact of the low pH, that can trigger chromosome breakage. because it is recognized that such events can occur as a result of changes in ionic strength or pH in the medium. On the basis of the available data tin tetrachlorid should not regarded as genotoxic.
