Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

In a short term respiration test using industrial sludge as inoculum and lasting for only 10 minutes, the EC50 concentration was dertermined to be greater than 900 mg/l (BASF AG 1986). In addition, a single species study is available using Pseudomonas putida as test organism, lasting 17 hours (BASF AG 1987d). No inhibitory effects were observed up to concentrations of 2000 mg/l (EC10 > 2000 mg/l, nominal). In chapter 7B of the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment (ECHA 2008) it says: " If activated sludge from an industrial sewage treatment plant is used as inoculum for a respiration or nitrification test, it is assumed that the microorganisms are adapted to the substance. Therefore, the test results cannot be extrapolated to municipal sewage treatment plants, since in municipal plants the bacteria may not be as adapted to the substance as the industrial sludge." Consequently, the PNECSTP for AH-salt has been derived from the single species study.
