Description of key information

The inhibition of degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The effect of morpholine on aquatic microorganisms was tested in multiple studies. Three studies were performed according to OECD 209 - one with domestic activated sludge (BASF AG, 1990), two with industrial activated sludge (BASF AG, 1980 and 1990). In all cases was the EC20 (30 min) > 1000 mg/L. Therefore it can be concluded that the inhibition of degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

In another study the effect of morpholine on Pseudomonas putida was tested in a growth inhibition test according to Bringmann. The resulting EC3 (16 h) was 310 mg/L (Bringmann & Kühn, 1977). Based on this result inhibition of degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
