- A water accommodated fraction was prepared for each treatment loading. Test substance was added to test medium and stirred for approximately 20 hours, then allowed to stand for approximately 1 hour before withdrawing an aliquot by siphon from the middle of the aqueous phase to avoid either floating or settled test substance. Seawater used in the study was UV sterilized, filtered to 0.2 um, and obtained from Scapa Flow, Orkney, UK.

No study investigating the short-term toxicity of Hydrocarbons, C11-C13 (odd numbered), n-alkanes, <2% aromatics to aquatic invertebrates is available. Thus, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the two main components undecane (CAS 1120-24-2) and tridecane (CAS 629-50-5) was conducted. The read across is justified since the tested substances are structurally identical to the components of the substance to register. In addition, due to the very high structural similarity of both components (undecane, tridecane) it is unlikely that effects are overlooked by separately testing the components.
In a research project funded by the dutch Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment the short-term toxicity of n-undecane to Daphnia magna and of n-undecane and n-tridecane to the marine crustacean species Chaetogammarus marinus and Mysidopsis bahia were investigated.
Being a well-established standard test species of the freshwater environment the test results with Daphnia magna (available only for undecane) were used as key information for the hazard assessment of Hydrocarbons, C11 -C13 (odd numbered), n-alkanes, <2% aromatics.
The acute toxicity of n-undecane was tested in an 48h non-GLP study with Daphnia magna under static conditions. Due to its low water solubility a 1000 mg/L loading rate WSF was used in a limit test. The substance analytics using GC confirmed the low water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L). 25 daphnids were exposed over 48 h. No toxic effects were observed within the range of solubility in water. Thus, the 48h-EL50 value is determined to be > 1000 mg/L based on the nominal and > 0.05 mg/L based on the initially measured test concentration.
This result was confirmed by test results of n-undecane and n-tridecane with the marine species Chaetogammarus marinus and Mysidopsis bahia. The short-term toxicity of the test substances were tested in 96h non-GLP studies under semi-static conditions. Due to its low water solubility a 1000 mg/L loading rate WSF was used in a limit test. The substance analytics using GC confirmed the low water solubility of both substances (< 0.05 mg/L). 10 daphnids were exposed over 96h. For both substances and all species tested no toxic effects were observed within the range of solubility in water. Thus, the 96h-EL50 values for all species-substance combinations are determined to be > 1000 mg/L based on the nominal and > 0.05 mg/L based on the initially measured test concentration.
Based on these information it can be concluded that Hydrocarbons, C11-C13 (odd numbered), n-alkanes, <2% aromatics is not considered to be toxic to aquatic invertebrates within its range of solubility in water.
This conclusion is confirmed by additional experimental data showing no acute toxic effects of the structurally similar Hydrocarbons, C11-C14, n-alkanes, <2% aromatics to Acartia tonsa.
