Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
Several studies on sensitiveness to impact and friction, effects of heating and ignition under confinement of the test item with different water content have been conducted, in accordance with the UN-MTC part1 method. The following table sum up the positive and negative results of these studies, according to UN-MTC part1 method (c.f.corresponding ESRs for more details).
Water content of the test item | Sensitiveness to ignition under confinement UN-MTC part1, type 1(b) | Sensitiveness to impact UN-MTC part1, type 3(a) | Sensitiveness to friction UN-MTC part1, type 3(b) |
3.1%(*) | [+] | [-] | [-] |
15%(**) | [-] | [-] | [+] – crepitation |
26.2%($) | Not determined | [-] | [+] – crepitation |
34.7%($) | [-] | [-] | [-] |
(*)– The water content of 3.1% was obtained by drying the test item with 34.7% of water content 2 hours at 80°C. (**)– The water content of 15% was obtained by drying the test item under vacuum at low temperature in order to prevent any thermal decomposition. ($)– Water content of the test item that can be handle, depending on the stage of the process. |
These results indicate that the test item is sensitive to impact and friction, heating and ignition under confinement, depending on its water content.
In addition, the thermal stability of the test item has been determined with a not-GLP compliant study, following the standard guideline OECD TG 113 (c.f.IUCLID section 4.19). During the DSC run one exothermic event was observed at 187.71°C. The event was very sharp with a high energy. The energy was with 1339.52 J/g above the threshold of -500 J/g. In accordance with the OECD TG 113, the test item is considered thermally stable, as no decomposition was observed at temperature below 150°C.
Moreover, the flammability of the test substance was assessed by performing a not-GLP compliant study according to the EU method A.10 (c.f. IUCLID section 4.13). After determination of the screening test, the test substance should be considered as highly flammable (for EU regulations) and flammable solid (for UN regulations), respectively, as the time of the screening test was very short . the test substance started to burn immediately after contact with the flame of thetecluburner.
Based on the ECHA guidance on the application of the CLP Criteria, section 2.1.4.5.1, and considering that:
- The test item (0.3% of water) is thermally stable;
- The test item (0.3% of water) is highly flammable;
- The test item is sensitive to friction, depending on its water content (3.1 to 34.7%);
The test item should be considered as an unstable explosive to non explosive depending on its water content.
