Description of key information
Appearance
On the basis of physical observation, the chemical (8-((4-Amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo)-7-hydroxy-2-naphthyl)trimethylamm- onium chloride was observed to be brown coloured powder in appearance.
Melting point
The melting point determination of [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2- naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 68391-32-2) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and mean melting temperature range was determined to be 182 °C-187.5°C at 972.6hPa.
Boiling point
The boiling point determination of [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2- naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 68391-32-2) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The test was conducted in replicates and boiling point was determined to be greater than 240°C at 973.1 hPa.
Density
The density of test item [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2- naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 68391-32-2)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the Test methods: Pour density and tapped density of powders” recommended in The International Pharmacopoeia, Fourth Edition, 2014 using bulk density apparatus . The mean pour density and tapped density of test item was determined to be 0.5570 g/cm³ and 0.7162 g/cm³at 28.4°C and 972.9 hPa.
Particle size distribution
The particle size distribution of test item [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2- naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 68391-32-2 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 10 micron.
Vapour pressure
Modified Grain method (Mean of Antoine and Modified Grain methods) was used to estimate the vapour pressure of the test substance(8-((4-Amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo)-7-hydroxy-2-naphthyl)trimethylamm- onium chlorideusing MPBPVP v1.43 of EPI SUITE.
The estimated vapour pressure of the test substance(8-((4-Amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo)-7-hydroxy-2-naphthyl)trimethylamm- onium chlorideat 25deg C was0.000000000000000196 Pa.
Vapour pressure value is reported as 0.000000001 Pa for the Chemical Safety Assessment due to the limitation in the field.
Partition coefficient
The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of test substance was determined as per the HPLC method (OECD Guideline-117). The Log Pow value was determined to be 2.736± 0.001 dimensionless at 25°C.
Water solubility
The water solubility determination of test item [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2-naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride;CAS No.68391-32-2 was done by spectrophotometric method. The water solubility was determined to be 7141.2 mg/L at 28°C.Based on the above value,it can be concluded that the test chemical is very soluble in water.
Surface tension:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The chemical [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2-naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride (Common Name: Basic Brown 17) is widely used as a hair color. For these use, surface activity is not a desired property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of test substance 8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-7-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylnaphthalen-2-aminium chloride was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method is closed cup method using Pensky Martin’s Flash Point Apparatus. The flashpoint of the test substance was determined to be in range of 90 -95 degree C at 980.9 hPa. Based on criteria mentioned in CLP regulation the chemical has flash point >than 60 degree C hence the substance was considered to be non-flammable.
Autoflammability:
8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-7-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylnaphthalen-2-aminium chloridedid not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°Cpressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-7-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylnaphthalen-2-aminium chlorideis not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-7-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylnaphthalen-2-aminium chloride does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-7-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylnaphthalen-2-aminium chloride is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus 8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-7-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylnaphthalen-2-aminium chloride was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties which include oxygen, but the calculated oxygen balance is less than - 200
Oxidising properties
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid (The chemical substance [8-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)azo]-7-hydroxy-2-naphthyl]trimethylammonium chloride (Common Name: Basic Brown 17) on the basis of chemical structure is not expected to exhibit oxidising properties. Thus, the testing was not conducted )
Viscosity:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid
