Administrative data

First-aid measures

Immediate medical care:
On usual use of the substance no immediate medical care is necesary.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media: Due to its explosive nature, the lead azide cannot be extinguished.

Unsuitable extinguishing media (even those that may not be used due to safety reasons): Not specified.

Special risk due to exposure to the substance, combustion products, development of gases:
On fire of objects containing the lead azide marked risk of explosion exists; carry out rapid evacuation of persons from the object and adjacent localities. The lead azide cannot be extinguished. Do not breath combustion products. Fire remains and contaminated extinguishing liquid shall be disposed in compliance with applicable regulations.

Special protective equipment for firemen: On fire use suitable protection of airways (isolation apparatus), or overall protection.

Accidental release measures

Person-related precautionary measures: Avoid access of unauthorised persons. Use suitable personal protective equipment. Proceed in compliance with instructions contained.

Environmental-protection measures: Not expected.

Procedures for cleaning and disposal: Disposal may only be performed by a person qualified as pyrotechnist, or possibly in compliance with applicable local regulations.

Handling and storage

Handling

1.Provisions for safe handling
The lead azide is an explosive sensitive to impact, friction, electric spark, and ignition. On handling extreme precaution is necessary. For more details.

2.Environmental-protection measures
Not applicable on common use. Upon accident, see par. 6.

3. Special requirements, including prohibited or recommended procedures on handling
Not applicable.

Storage
1. Conditions of safe storage
Store only in special containers designated thereto, with a closed lid, in dry and well ventilated premises. Warehouse must meet requirements of local regulations, as last amended, on the storage of explosives.
No other explosives, as well as substances of other nature as, for example, medicaments, foodstuff, beverages, feed etc., may be stored together with the lead azide.

2. Highest admissible quantity of the substance for given storage premises: Determined by a final building approval decision for a given object

3. Requirements on material types used for packages and vessels: Hardened, electrostatic conductive rubber

4. Specific use: Not applicable

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure limits in working environment:
The lead azide is a lead compound, for which the following concentration limit within the working environment (PEL, NPK-P) has been determined:
Chemical name CAS Admissible exposure limit Highest admissible concentration PEL [mg.m-3] NPK-P [mg.m-3]
Lead compounds as Pb 0.05 0.2
Note : The admissible value limits may vary in relation to local national regulations.

Personal protective equipment:
1. Respiratory protection
Not applicable on common (usual) use. After detonation a filter type pursuant to ČSN EN 14387:2004 (83 2220) “Respiratory protection equipment. Gas and combined filters. Requirements, testing and marking (October 2004)” is suitable. The mask or half-mask etc. type shall be determined in compliance with the work to be performed.

2. Hand protection: Not applicable on common (usual) use.

3. Eye protection: Safety spectacles with side protection/closed spectacles/facial protective shield pursuant to ČSN EN 166:2002 (83 2401) “Personal equipment to protect eyes. Basic provisions” (October 2002).

4. Skin protection (all body) : (Protection) overall. Do not eat, drink, and smoke on work. Put off dirty and stained clothing parts. Contaminated clothes to be washed before re-use. After work wash your hands with warm water and soap and treat skin with suitable reparation means.

Environmental exposure controls: Not applicable on common use; avoid leaks to surface streams and to sewerage.

Stability and reactivity

The substance is highly unstable explosive.

Disposal considerations

Possible risk on removal - There is a risk of explosion on removal of waste.

1. Substance disposal methods: It is disposed by explosion in the place determined and approved thereto. the disposal may only be performed by a person qualified as shot-firer.

2. Polluted package disposal methods: Package pollution is not expected.

Recommended classification of waste pursuant to (Edict No. 381/2001 Coll. as last amended)
Note: The asterisk at the catalogue number designates a dangerous waste.
