Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids)
Version / remarks:
VDI 2263 (1990), sheet 1 , Grewer oven.
Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Principle of test:
The self-ignition behaviour of the test substance is evaluated in a Grewer oven according to VDI 2263, sheet 1 and with respect to the classification procedures of the UN Transport Regulation (Class 4 Division 4.2 and GHS.
The test equipment is an oven with six wire baskets with a volume of 8 cm3, a temperature controller and a temperature recorder.
The wire baskets containing the test substance and reference material (graphite) are heated at a rate of 1.2K/min at atmospheric pressure in an air stream of 100 to 120 L/ hour, up to 425oC. The temperature at which the temperature of the test substance exceeds the temperature of the reference material is considered to be the onset of the self-ignition.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the test no self heating of the test substance was observed.
Executive summary:

The self-ignition behaviour of Barium Selenate was determined in a GLP study performed using a Grewer oven according to VDI 2263, sheet 1 and with respect to the classification procedures of the UN Transport Regulation (Class 4 Division 4.2) and GHS.

Wire baskets containing the test substance, test substance blended with 50% wt Kieselguhr and a reference material (graphite) were heated at a rate of 1.2K/min at atmospheric pressure in an air stream of 100 to 120 L/ hour, up to 425oC. The pure test item Barium Selenate presented no self-heating properties at atmospheric pressure up to a maximum test temperature of 425oC.

No classification as self-heating according to GHS/CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 is required.
