- Executive summary:
A study was conducted according to UN Test N.1. Therefore, the test item was formed into a powder train. It was ignited by a gas flame and the burning rate is determined. As the burning time over a distance of 200 mm in the preliminary test was 86 s the main test was performed. The burning time in the main test was found to be 34 s over a distance of 100 mm. Due to the fact that the burning time was found to be below the threshold of 45 s over a distance of 100 mm, the substance has to be classified as flammable solid in category 1 (Signal Word: Danger) with the Hazard Statement H228.

Preliminary Test
The burning time over a distance of 200 mm is 86 s. This is below the threshold of the burning time of 2 minutes according to UN Transportation Regulation and GHS / CLP Regulation.
Therefore, the main test had to be performed.
Main Test
In the main test the burning time over a distance of 100 mm after a pre-burning distance of 80 mm was measured. The burning time over a distance of 100 mm is 34 s. It was observed that the test item melted and at least the liquid phase of the test item was heavily burning. This burning time is less than 45 seconds over a distance of 100 mm and the flame passed the wetted zone. Due to the fact that already in the first test the burning time was below 45 s (no metal), no further tests were necessary.
Description of key information
The substance has to be classified as flammable solid in category 1 (Signal Word: Danger) with the Hazard Statement H228.
The substance has not to be classified as flammable gas, flammable liquid, flammable in contact with water, flammable aerosol, pyrophoric solid, pyrophoric liquid or self-heating substance.

Flammable gases
The test item is a solid at ambient conditions. This hazard class is only applicable for gases. Thus, the substance was not considered for classification as flammable gas.
Flammable liquid
The test item has a waxy consistency at room temperature and a melting range of 31 to 44 °C. For safe handling of the test item, not only the flammability of the test item was investigated but also the flash point for the molten state. The flash point of the test item was determined in an experimental study according to Regulation EC No 440/2008 Method A.9 and DIN EN ISO 3679 using the rapid equilibrium method in a closed cup. The mean flash point was determined to be 94 °C at 1013 hPa. Therefore the test item has not to be classified as flammable liquid.
Flammable solids

Pyrophoric liquids
The test item is a solid at ambient conditions. This hazard class is only applicable for liquids. Thus, the substance was not considered for classification as flammable liquid.
Pyrophoric solids
In accordance with section 2.10.4 Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and ECHA guidance on the application of CLP Criteria section 2.10.4.1 the classification procedure for pyrophoric solids needs not to be applied when experience in manufacture or handling shows that the solid does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures (i.e. the solid is known to be stable at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days)). Based on the experience in handling and use the substance is not known to ignite spontaneously when coming into contact with air at normal temperatures. Thus, no study was conducted and the substance was not considered for classification as pyrophoric solid.
Self-heating substances and mixtures
In accordance with ECHA guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria section 2.11.4.2 and ECHA guidance on IR/CSA chapter R.7a section R7.1.10.7 the test does not to be conducted as in general liquids and low melting solids are not classified as self-heating since the phenomena applies only to solids and the test method is not applicable to liquids and low melting solids according to ECHA guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria section 2.11.4.2.
Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VI and with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 Annex I section 2.12.4 and ECHA guidance on the application of CLP Criteria section 2.12.4.2 the classification procedure for this hazard class needs not to be applied. Based on the experience in handling and use the substance does not react with water and in addition the test substance is not pyrophoric. Thus, no study was conducted and the substance was not considered for classification.
Flammable Aerosols
Section 2.4.2 of Guidance on the application on the CLP Criteria state as follows: “Aerosols, this means aerosol dispensers, are any non-refillable receptacles made of metal, glass or plastics and containing a gas compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure, with or without a liquid, paste or powder, and fitted with a release device allowing the contents to be ejected as solid or liquid particles in suspension in a gas, as a foam, paste or powder or in a liquid state or in a gaseous state." Thus, as the substance does not meet the definition for aerosol, the test for aerosols was waived. Consequently the substance has not to be considered for classification for this hazard class.
In conclusion, the substance has to be classified as flammable solid in category 1 (Signal Word: Danger) with the Hazard Statement H228.
The substance has not to be classified as flammable gas, flammable liquid, flammable in contact with water, flammable aerosol, pyrophoric solid, pyrophoric liquid or self-heating substance.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008
In accordance with Annex I Section 2.2, Section 2.3, Section 2.7, Section 2.9, Section 2.10 Section 2.11, Section 2.12 of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, as amended for the eighteenth time in Regulation (EU) 2022/692, and UN GHS Rev 9 (2021) the test item has to be classified as, readily combustible solid in class 4 Division 4.1, but has not to be classified as flammable liquid, self-heating substance in Class 4 Division 4.2, substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases in Class 4 Division 4.3, pyrophoric liquid, pyrophoric solid in class 4 Division 4.2, flammable gases in class 2 or as aerosol in class 2.
