2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (TMCD) does not exhibit any significant hydrolysis. In a ready biodegradation study the substance exhibited a 22 day lag phase before biodegradation began, but demonstrated >60% biodegradation 22 days after biodegradation began, and 72.6% degradation 27 days after biodegradation began. While the results of this study do not allow the substance to be considered readily biodegradable, the biodegradation observed that was based upon CO2 evolution indicates that ultimate biodegradation does occur. The substance also has a low octanol-water partition coefficient (log Pow=1.6) and adsorption coefficient (log Koc < 1.25) and therefore is not expected to sorb to soils or sediment or bioaccumulate in aquatic, sediment, or terrestrial organisms.
