First-aid measures

In case of doubt or if symptoms persist, consult a physician/doctor and show this safety data sheet. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Provide eye wash fountains and safety showers in places where the mixture is handled.

Description of first aid measures

If inhaled

Fatal if inhaled. Get the person out of the contaminated zone and keep at rest outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. The irritant effects induced by CS can continue during 30 minutes or more after having leaved the contaminated area. If no breathing, give artificial respiration.

In case of skin contact

Wash off with soap (without oil) and plenty of water. Remove/Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Can cause allergic reactions.

In case of eye contact

Rinse thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes after removing the contact lenses with clear hands if necessary, consult an ophthalmologist. Provide eye wash fountains and safety showers in workshops where the mixture is handled.

In case of swallowing

Harmful by ingestion. If the victim is conscious, rinse thoroughly the mouth with water. Immediately seek for medical advice. Do not induce vomiting, for unconscious person. Can cause stomach damages.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute an delayed

INHALATION: irritation of respiratory tract, nausea, vomiting, respiratory difficulties, headaches, pulmonary hypereamia.

INGESTION: Diarrhea, spams, convulsions.

SKIN: redness, burning sensation, formation of bladder in case of allergic reaction.

EYES: lachrymal effect, burning sensation, irritation, conjunctivitis, red patches, blinding light.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media: Water spray, CO2, chemical powders and foams.

Prohibited extinguishing media: -

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

During its combustion, CS produces toxic smokes, mainly carbon monoxide CO, nitrogen oxides NOx, carbon dioxide CO2, hydrogen chloride HCI and hydrogen cyanide HCN (HCN and HCl above 1000 °C).

Advice for firefighters

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary. Do not stay in dangerous zone without suitable protection clothing.

Further information:

Prevent the effluent of the fight against the fire from entering sewers or waterways. Avoid spraying water directly on the storage tank to prevent overflow of the product.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Wear appropriate protective clothing (waterproof). Do not inhale dusts. Avoid substance contact. Ensure supply of fresh air in enclosed rooms. Intervention with appropriate respiratory protection.

Environmental protection

Do not allow the product to enter sewerage system.

If the product contaminates waterways, sewers, rivers or drains, alert the relevant authorities in accordance with local regulations.

Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up

Contain and collect spillage with non-combustible absorbent materials such as sand, earth, vermiculite in a sealed container for its elimination. Place in container for disposal of recovered waste in accordance with applicable regulations (see section 13). Clean up affected area with soap water. Do not use bleach.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

HANDLING

Ensure adequate ventilation.

Avoid breathing vapors, mists or dusts.

Provide vapor extraction at the emission source and general room ventilation

Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with the skin in order to minimize any risk of sensitization

Avoid the accumulation of electrostatic charges; keep away from sources of ignition.

Any unintended operation by technical instructions or performed by untrained personnel is prohibited.

Avoid contact with incompatible materials (see section 10).

Before use, check presence of peroxides, eliminate them.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES:

Wear respiratory protection (see section 8) for exceptional short tasks, or for emergency interventions.

Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept preferably upright.

Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using the product.

Contaminated clothing should not leave the workplace.

Conditions for safe storage including any incompatibilities

Do not store with combustive products.

Never open the containers by pressure.

It is recommended not to wear contact lenses.

Do not repackage containers before washing and emptying them.

Keep containers tightly closed. Store in a well-ventilated, cool area and protected from the bad weather. Prolonged exposure of the product to water and to a very high relative humidity may affect its functioning.

The floor of storage places must be impermeable and form a retention pond so that, in case of spillage, the liquid cannot spread outside.

Store in plastic containers. The glass can be used for small quantities. In this case, the cylinders shall be protected by a stronger metal shell suitably adjusted. Do not store in metal containers.

Keep away from sources of ignition, heat and incompatible materials (see section 10).

Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs.

Specific end use(s)

Apart from the uses mentioned in section1.2, no other specific uses are stipulated.

Recommended equipment and procedures: for personal protective equipment, see section 8.

Respect precautions indicated on the label.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Control parameters

O-chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile Exposure limit value (Threshold limit value): 0,05 ppm / 0,4mg/m3 (French regulation VLE INRS ED 984 of 2007)

Personal Protective Equipment:

Eye protection:

Wear eye protection, including goggles and chemicals resistant face shield, if eye contact with liquid splash or dust.

Respiratory protection:

Adequate ventilation must be maintained (proceed periodically to atmospheric controls).

Half–mask with built-in filter is recommended in case of overexposure. For the handling of high volume, wear a canister-type gas mask (type FP 2) for organic solvents or a respiratory system.

Keep working areas perfectly clean and clean them frequently. Observe very strict personal hygiene.

Hand protection:

Protective gloves must comply with all specifications of the standard EN 374. Material: butyl-rubber.

Skin protection:

Complete suit protecting against chemicals. The type of protective equipment must be selected according to the concentration and amount of the dangerous substance at the specific workplace.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity

Strong oxidizing agent like perchlorates, peroxides and ozone (risk of fire and explosion)

Chemical stability

The mixture is stable under normal use conditions described in Section 7. CS loses these characteristics by hydrolyzing in the presence of water (half-life of 15 min).

Hazardous decomposition products

Vapors of hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide (CS decomposition).

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Waste treatment methods: Eliminate this material and its container as hazardous waste. This product CAN neither be sent to landfill nor be discharged into sewers, drains, natural streams or rivers. Eliminate according to local safety regulations / national regulations.

Recommendations for evacuation of waste water: Do not discharge to sewer.

Disposal recommendations for packaging: The use of packaging is only intended for the packaging of this product. After last use, the package will be completely emptied and closed. When it comes to returnable packaging, empty packaging will be taken back by the supplier. Because of the risk of explosion, do not weld, cut or burn barrels or other containers containing or having contained this product.

Contaminated packaging: Empty container completely. Keep (the) label (s) on the container.

Give the container to a certified disposal contractor.

Additional information: The user's attention is drawn to the possible existence of local regulations, related to waste treatment method, concerning him. Elimination must be carried out and should be in accordance with local, regional or national legislation.
