Description of key information
During the production and the industrial use of dibismuth trisulfide there is no release into the waste water. Therefore, an input via sludge application on agricultural soil is considered to be negligible. In addition, bismuth and bismuth compounds are not listed on the list of regulated heavy metals in the EEC directive 86/278/EEC on the protection of the environment, and in particular of the soil, when sludge is used in agriculture.
The vapour pressure of this inorganic compound is expected to be very low and particles tend to agglomeration and disposition on surfaces, thus, also the exposure via air is considered to be negligible.
Acute tests on water organisms of three trophic stages showed no toxicity up to limit concentration.
Taken together, due to the ecotoxicological data on water organisms and the low bioavailability it is concluded that tests on terrestrial plants will not provide additional information for the ecotoxicological risk assessment. Moreover, the exposure via different pathways is limited. Consequently the terrestrial studies are waived.
