Description of key information
Liquid and solid: In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the explosive properties study (required in section 7.11.) does not need to be conducted as the substance does not contain chemical groups associated with explosive properties. The substance is a 25% solution in water.

Potential explosive properties of the test item disodium tetrasulfide (EC no. 215-686-9) were determined in a study according to Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008, method A.14. The testing on the explosive properties consists of three parts: - Mechanical shock sensitivity - Mechanical friction sensitivity - Thermal sensitivity. For testing of Mechanical shock sensitivity, the test item is exposed to the impact of a drop-weight in the “BAM Fallhammer“ (BAM = Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung = German Institute for Materials Testing), where the impact energy is determined by the mass of this weight, the gravitation and the drop height. The observation of a visible or audible explosion or sparking is interpreted as a positive result. The substance is assessed to be shock sensitive when positive results are obtained at an impact energy of 40 J or less. Solids should be tested in dry state.
Fot the testing of Mechanical friction sensitivity, the test item is tested in the “BAM friction apparatus“. The sample positioned on a movable flat porcelain plate is exposed to the friction of a porcelain peg loaded with a weight. Thus a defined friction load acts upon the substance. The observation of a visible or audible explosion or crackling or sparking is interpreted as a positive result. The substance is assessed to be friction sensitive when positive results are obtained at a friction load of 360 N or less. Solids should be tested in dry state. The test is not performed with liquid samples.
For testing of thermal sensitivity, the test item is exposed to the effect of intense heat (produced by 4 gas burners) under confinement in steel tubes with well defined orifices. The fragmentation pattern of the steel tube is used as a criterion for the determination of a positive result. This is achieved when more than two fragments are produced at an orifice diameter of 2 mm or more.
As the test item was neither shock sensitive nor thermally or friction sensitive, according to the criteria of the EC test method A.14, it is not representing an explosive hazard and has not to be considered to present a danger of explosion.
