Conclusions:
The test mixture of Bismuth subnitrate with cellulose in the ratio 4:1 does not ignite. The burning time of the test mixture of Bismuth subnitrate and Cellulose (1:1) was determined to be 248.2 seconds and the mean burning time of the reference mixture to be 141.6 seconds. In conclusion, bismuth subnitrate is not classified as an oxidising solid.
Executive summary:

The oxidising properties of bismuth subnitrate were assessed using UN test method Test 0.1 for Class 5.1, described in the "United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Third revised edition, 1999".

Description of key information

Bismuth subnitrate is not oxidising.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

A study was conducted to determine the oxidising properties of the test item, bismuth subnitrate, according to the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Part A: Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties. A. 17. Oxidizing properties of solids.

Due to the fact that the mixture of the test item with cellulose burned slower compared to the reference mixture, or the flame extinguished before the pre-burning phase was finished, it was concluded that the test item has no oxidising properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance has been shown to have no oxidising properties therefore it is not classified.
