Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Ethanedinitrile is a very specific case of a substance. It is gaseous substance (boiling point -21 °C) with high toxicity. It is also endogenous compound produced during process of burning of organic matter (approximateky 15 000 tons per year). The compound is known for very long time and it was firstly synthetized in 1815 by Joseph Gay-Lussac. Ethanedinitrile was produced and research has been done on its compound. Thanks to this, there exist relevant literature data about this compound including its physical and chemical properties verified by decades of use.

OECD guidelines and other standards are mostly written rather for the liquid or solid substances. Often the methodology described in these standards is not meant to be followed with gas. The guidelines like OECD are mostly not directly applicable and changes in the setups needs to be done to adjust the standards to obtain valid results. Sometimes even the setup from some articles needs to be followed since the setup of the standards is not applicable. By using data from literature we would skip these issues and used the values which were measured in past by scientists who taillored a study to fit thenature of ethanedinitrile.
