Description of key information

The substance is an extremely flammable gas. It is chemically unstable at a temperature greater than 20 °C and/or a pressure greater than 101.3 kPa. Testing for pyrophoric properties as well as water reactivity is not applicable as the substance is a gas. The substance also does not need to be considered as self-reactive as well as self-heating based on its state of matter. In accordance with the chemical structure the substance is no organic peroxide.

Additional information

The flammability of the substance as well as its explosion limits are derived in a weight-of-evidence approach of three secondary sources, HSDB, GESTIS and Hommel. All values match together. Taking the primary source of the data into account HSDB is considered as the most valid source as the data is derived from US authorities. Therefore this source is chosen as key result.

According to UN-MTC, Section 35.3.2.1 it is classified as chemically unstable gas, category B.

Pyrophoric properties and water reactivity does not need to be considered for the substance based on its state of matter as gas as both categories are not applicable for gases. Additionally self-reactive and self-heating behaviour could be excluded based on the state of matter. Deduced from the chemical structure the substance is no organic peroxide.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The flammability of the substance is derived from three different sources as extremely flammable. Considering the explosion limits (2.6 to 39 vol-%) both conditions of regulation EC/1272/2008 (CLP) for flammable gases are fulfilled. The substance is ignitable in a mixture with air at a ratio of 13vol-% or lesser and also the substance has a explosion range of at least 12 vol-%. Therefore the substance is classified as flammable gas Cat. 1 (H220) resp. R12.

According to UN-MTC, Section 35.3.2.1 it is classified as chemically unstable gas, category B (H231).

As other categories are not relevant as they are either not applicable or could be waived based on the state of matter or the chemical structure the substance does not need further classification for flammability.
