Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

1,3-Butadiene is a colourless gas with a mild aromatic odour at standard temperature and pressure, with a melting point of -108.9˚C at standard atmospheric pressure, a boiling point of -4.41°C, a density of 0.6149 g/cm3 at 25°C, a vapour pressure of 217 kPa at 17 °C and 255 kPa at 22ºC, a log Kow of 1.99 at 20 °C, a density of 735 mg/L at 20°C, an autoignition temperature of 420°C and lower and upper flammability limits of 2-12% by volume in air.

Data on physical properties were obtained from a number of secondary sources. The data in these secondary sources are based on a critical evaluation of peer-reviewed data and the selected values are considered to be reliable and representative of the property under investigation. Information in the review process was documented in the introduction of the source. The use of Klimisch codes (Klimisch et al., 1997), was extended to these secondary sources and a reliability code of (2) valid with restrictions was assigned when using the authoritative secondary source. The values obtained from these secondary sources reflect the values cited in the EU RAR (2002) for buta-1,3 -diene.

The flammable limits of 1,3-butadiene (2 -12%) indicate that this substance would be classified as R12 'extremely flammable' under the DSD and as a Category 1 flammable gas with the hazard statement "extremely flammable gas" under the CLP Regulations.
