Executive summary:

The relative self-ignition temperature test for solids was performed in a temperature programmed oven of approximately 2 L volume with natural air circulation. A stainless steel wire mesh, 20 mm test cube with 0.045 mm openings was filled with the test sample. The cube was then gently tapped and refilled until completely full. The sample temperature was monitored by a thermocouple placed in the center of the test cube. Another thermocouple was placed between the test cube and the oven wall to monitor oven temperature. The temperature of the oven and the sample were continuously recorded while the temperature of the oven was increased to 400°C or to the melting point of the solid, if lower, at a rate of 0.5°C/min. The temperature of the oven at which the sample temperature reaches 400°C by self-heating is called the self-ignition temperature.

The sample tracked the oven temperature until approximately 218°C where the sample entered a small endotherm, the sample then entered a small exothermic reaction at approximately 342°C. The sample tracked the oven temperature for the duration of the test. The sample did not reach 400°C by self-heating. On completion of testing the basket was empty but black residue remained on the base of the oven.
