Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
21 Oct 2003
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

No ignition of the substance was observed in the preliminary screening test according to EU method A.10

Validity criteria for the measurement of the flammability:

Target condition according to guideline:Actual condition according to the study:Validity criteria met:
The report shall include the results of the tests (steps 1, 2, 3 and 4) and the chemical identity of gas evolved. The results of the steps are stated. No gas evolution occured.Yes
The rate of evolution of gas if step 4 is performed shall be stated. No gas evolution occured.Yes
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
Androst-4-ene-3,17-dione can be considered as not highly flammable.
Executive summary:

No ignition of the substance was observed in the preliminary screening test according to EU method A.10. Therefore, the substance is not to be considered as highly flammable. No further testing is required.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Androst-4-ene-3,17-dione can be considered as not highly flammable, not pyrophoric and not reactive in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

No ignition was observed in the preliminary screening test according to EU method A.10. Therefore, the substance is not to be considered as highly flammable. No further testing is required.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Pyrophoric properties are determined following the methods N.3 (UN-Manual of testing) or A.13 (EU-method). However, in accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, a study does not need to be conducted as it is scientifically unjustified. Based on experience during handling and use, no pyrophoric properties were observed and the structure does not give a reference to pyrophoric properties. The flammability of a substance on contact with water is determined following the methods N.5 (UN-Manual of testing) or A.12 (EU-method). However, in accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, a study does not need to be conducted as it is scientifically unjustified. Based on experience during handling and use, the substance does not liberate highly flammable gases on contact with water or humid air.
