Reason / purpose:
data waiving: supporting information
Endpoint:
flammability
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Minimum ignition temperature of the dust layer was determined on a hot plate.
GLP compliance:
no
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The minimum ignition temperature of the dust layer was determined on a hot plate. Two layer thickness were used: 5 and 15 mm. Different temperatures and different times were established. The sample cannot ignite as a dust layer since the dust melts before igniting.
Executive summary:

The minimum ignition temperature of the dust layer was determined on a hot plate. Two layer thickness were used: 5 and 15 mm. Different temperatures and different times were established. The sample cannot ignite as a dust layer since the dust melts before igniting.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Based on a study where the objective was to determined the minimum ignition temperature, it is concluded that the substance cannot ignite as a dust layer since the dust melts before igniting. The melting point of the substance is 83.01 ºC.

For BHT pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water can be excluded since the experience in manufacture and handling shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures. Additionally, there are no functional groups within the test item molecule that could cause pyrophoricity or flammability in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

For the test substance pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water can be excluded since the experience in manufacture and handling shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures. Additionally, there are no functional groups within the test item molecule that could cause pyrophoricity or flammability in contact with water, basis:  "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment", Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance, R.7.1.10.3 and table R.7.1-27 (ECHA, May 2008).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is not classified as Flammable solid according to the CLP Regulation.
