Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No data on sediment toxicity are available.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex X, the study on sediment organisms does not need to be conducted if the results of the chemical safety assessment indicates no need to investigate further the effects of the substance and/or relevant degradation products on sediment organisms. The physicochemical data indicate that the substance is not adsorptive (Log Koc 0.73)  or bioaccumulative (LogPow 1.35, OECD 107, BASF AG 2000, report no. 00E03071) and is considered as readily biodegradable. Distribution modelling (Mackay Level I v3.00) clearly showed that 3-methylbutan-1-ol will mainly be found in water (73.4%). Therefore, a relevant distribution into the sediment compartment and a considerable exposure of sediment organisms is not expected.

Additional information

The test substance is not supposed to be directly applied to sediment and an indirect exposure to sediment is unlikely since the substance is readily biodegradable. For substances being considered as „readily biodegradable“, it can be assumed that they will be biologically degraded within the STP-process. In special cases, if the substance is not entering the STP-process but is readily biodegradable, it can be assumed that it will be rapidly biological degraded in the surface water. In both cases, a transfer to the sediment compartment is unlikely. Therefore, no tests on sediment organisms are provided.
