Description of key information

Under the conditions of the present test FORMAMIDOPROPYLBETAINE (37% active ingredient betaine) induced no visible effects in daphnia at 37 mg/L (21-day NOEC) based on mortality, reproduction and growth. The 21-day LC50/EC50 were not calculated as the observed effects were below 50%.

Additional information

The 21-day-chronic toxicity of formamidopropylbetain (37% active ingredient, betain) to Daphnia magna was studied under static renewal conditions. Daphnidswere exposed to control, and test chemical at nominal concentrations of 4.6 mg/L, 10 mg/L, 22 mg/L, 46 mg/L and 100 mg/L corresponding to 1.702, 3.7, 8.14, 17.02 and 37 mg a.i./L.  The 21 day LC50/EC50were not calculated as the observed effects were below 50%. The 21-day NOEC based on mortality and sublethal effects was >= 37 mg a.i./L.  The sublethal effects included were reproduction and growth.  Production of offsprings in the treated groups indicated that formamidopropylbetaine did not have an effect on the reproduction at concentrations up to 37 mg a.i./L.

This study is classified as reliable without restriction and satisfies the guideline requirements for a chronic toxicity study with freshwater invertebrates.
