Nanomaterialer i henhold til forordningen om biocidholdige produkter
Nanomaterialer er kemiske stoffer eller materialer, der fremstilles og anvendes i meget lille skala. Deres struktur måler mellem 1 og 100 nm i mindst én dimension.
Nanomaterialer har unikke karakteristika, der er mere fremtrædende end hos samme materiale uden nanoegenskaber. Derfor kan nanomaterialer have andre fysisk-kemiske egenskaber end bulkstoffet eller større partikler.
Nanoteknologien udvikler sig hastigt. I Europa markedsføres allerede et stort antal produkter, der indeholder nanomaterialer (f.eks. batterier, belægninger, antibakteriel beklædning, kosmetik og fødevarer). Uanset nanomaterialernes tekniske og kommercielle potentiale kan de medføre risici for miljøet og sundheds- og sikkerhedsproblemer for mennesker og dyr.
- Mindst 50 % af partiklerne har en størrelse på 1-100 nm i mindst én dimension
- Partiklerne findes i ubundet tilstand eller som et aggregat eller et agglomerat
