Skin contact: Immediately flush skin thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Obtain medical attention immediately.
Eye contact: Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15 to 20 minutes. Obtain medical attention immediately.
Notes to physician: Symptomatic treatment as in case of burns. Please, note general recommendations on treatment: "Aluminium alkyls - properties and handling" are applicable.
ROUTES OF ENTRY: Skin, Inhalation, Eyes
Fire-fighting measures
Hazardous combustion products: Combustible gases (olefines, hydrogen). Fume.
Special fire fighting procedures: Caution: covered product is still reactive. Re-ignition possible!
Special protective equipment for firefighters: Use fireproof clothing. Wear heat resistant clothing, self contained breathing apparatus.
Extinguishing media:
Suitable: - fire blanket; dry sand; carbon dioxide (in case of small fires); dry powder; nitrogen; vermiculite (in case of larger fires)
Unsuitable: Water; foam
Unusual fire and explosion hazards
Formation of fumes which irritate the respiratory tract., In case of a fire aside from the major combustion products carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide other harmful gases and vapors may be formed.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions: Eliminate sources of ignition., Avoid inhalation of vapors., Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Environmental precautions: Cover spilled product with dry powder, dry sand, Vermiculite or fire blanket., For fire fighting refer to section 5, Prevent from entering sewer system or surface water.
Handling and storage
HANDLING
Handling precautions: Handle only in special packaging under an inert gas blanket., Keep container tightly closed., Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
Other precautions: Avoid contact with air and water., Take precautionary measures against static discharges., Installation of an emergency shower.
STORAGE
Storage requirements: Store under nitrogen., Keep container tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated place.

Exposure controls / personal protection
The substance is a metal alkyl and is known to be a highly reactive compound. Most commercially available Metal Alkyls, including the subject of this registration, react explosively with water with the concurrent release of extremely flammable gases, and they are pyrophoric, i.e. they ignite spontaneously on contact with air. The hazardous properties of Metal Alkyls make it necessary to take all precautions necessary to avoid accidental spillage.
Properties of aluminium alkyls (pyrophoricity, extreme reactivity towards water, inorganic acids and bases, any other protic substances like e.g. alcohols, and high reactivity towards nearly any functional group in organic molecules) require to handle aluminium alkyls under strictly oxygen-free and totally anhydrous conditions. Even in cases where very low amounts of oxygen and humidity (water) are present quality of said substances will be affected significantly though safety risks are excluded.
Inert gases suitable for handling of aluminium alkyls are nitrogen and argon. Even carbon dioxide is capable to react with aluminium alkyls although reaction is relatively slow. Therefore carbon dioxide may be used as fire-fighting agent for small spillages in laboratories.
Consequently, handling of these compounds requires rigorous exclusion of air and moisture. The products are transported under a nitrogen blanket in specially designed portable tanks. Transfer of the product from the production facilities into these portable tanks, and from the tanks to the customers facilities, takes place using closed systems in dedicated unloading stations.
Due to their pyrophoric and water-reactive nature,
(a) Metal Alkyls are rigorously contained by technical means during their whole lifecycle, including manufacture, purification, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, sampling, analysis, loading and unloading of equipment or vessels, waste disposal and storage;
(b) Procedural and control technologies are in place that minimise emission and any resulting exposure;
(c) Only properly trained and authorised personnel is handling Metal Alkyls;
(d) In the case of cleaning and maintenance works, special procedures such as purging and washing are applied before the system is opened and entered;
(e) In cases of accident and where waste is generated, procedural and/or control technologies are used to minimise emissions and the resulting exposure during decontamination or cleaning and maintenance procedures;
(f) Substance-handling procedures are well documented and strictly supervised by the site operator.
All these characteristics of Metal Alkyls have pushed Metal Alkyls producers to put in place strong product stewardship practices for the manufacture, transportation, distribution and sale to ensure shared responsibility between all stakeholders in minimizing risk of leakages, personnel exposure and environmental impact by specifying appropriate containers, procedures and protective equipment, by recommending procedures for proper disposal and in actively looking for customer cooperation in audits and procedures.
PERSONAL PROTECTION Recommended:
Hand protection / protective gloves
For short time operations: PVC gauntlet gloves with internal reinforcement., For long term operations: Tight leather gauntlet gloves.
Eye protection
Full face safety goggles., Full face shield.
Skin protection
Protective clothing made of non flammable materials. (Aramid fibre)
Stability and reactivity
Stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions - under nitrogen blanket. Highly unstable when exposed to water / air.
Incompatible materials: Air, Water.
Hazardous combustion products: Combustible gases (olefines, hydrogen). Fume.
Disposal considerations
Any aluminum alkyl waste must be handled as for final product. Waste should be incinerated in authorized incineration units or hydrolyzed in dedicated facilities. Products of hydrolysis are aluminium hydroxide – Al(OH)3 – and saturated hydrocarbons (gas and liquid) besides saline water which is treated in waste water treatment units. The organic phase of hydrolysis (gas and liquid) is separated from aqueous media and incinerated separately.
General: Dilute with petroleum or Diesel oil to a maximum 10 % solution and burn in a permitted hazardous waste incinerator.
Non-cleaned packages: Rinse with dry inert hydrocarbon., Dispose of washing solution in the same way as product.
