Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance benzol forerunnings (coal) contains > 0.1% Benzene and can also contain > 0.1% 1,3 -butadiene. Benzene and 1,3 -butadiene are known carcinogens.

Long term carcinogenicity studies on benzene have confirmed that benzene is a carcinogen producing different types of tumours in animals (including lymphomas and leukemia). Epidimiologiocal studies on Benzene also found evidence for a causal relationship between benzene exposure and leukaemia. Due to the significant presence of benzene in benzol forerunnings (coal) the substance as a whole also has to be considered as a carcinogen.

1,3-butadiene has produced several type of tumors in animal studies. In addition epidimiological research has consistently found that exposure to 1,3-butadiene can result in increased cancer occurence. Therefore any substance containing >0.1% 1,3-butadiene has to be considered as a carcinogen.

Justification for classification or non-classification

CAS 65996 -88 -5 has a harmonised classification as H350 (carc. 1B).

The carcinogenicity classification is in addition also supported by the presence of benzene and 1,3 butadiene, known cat 1A carcinogens in quantities in excess of 0.1%. Both of those substances also have a harmonised classification as carcinogen.
