Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- Kinematic viscosity of n-Butyllithium 90% in hexane at 20 degree C: ca. 20.1 mm2 s-1
However, due to the fact that only one run could be performed and that the sample had obviously already reacted with traces of moisture, thereby changing its viscosity, the results can not be considered as reliable. - Executive summary:
This endpoint is not required for intermediates at tonnage band above 1000 t/a.
The measurement was performed according to OECD Guideline 114.The determination could only be performed once. In the second run the upper photo sensor did not detect the samples surface, probably due to a deposit on the capillary walls. As a result the sample spilled over and the measurement had to be stopped immediately. It was also noticed that the samples appearance had changed between taking a subsample from the original vessel (under protective gas in a glove box) and introducing it into the capillary as well as during the course of the viscosity measurement itself. Originally a yellowish liquid with a white sediment, and seemingly low viscosity, the sample at the time of the measurement appeared more flocculated and white with a higher viscosity. During the measurement the sample became even more hazy (grey). Again, greatest care was taken to protect the sample from moisture, but the Ubbelohde viscosimeter is a system generally open to the environment and can obviously only be protected with inert gas to a certain extent. The kinematic viscosity at 20 degree C was determined to be ca. 20.1 mm2 s-1. However, due to the fact that only one run could be performed and that the sample had obviously already reacted with traces of moisture, thereby changing its viscosity, the results can not be considered as reliable.
