Description of key information

The following studies have been submitted to address the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates endpoint:
Steger-Hartmann T., and M. Schmidt (1999). Acute immobilization test of di-n-butyltin dilaurate (ZK 21976) with Daphnia magna. Schering AG, Research Report No. IC25. Berlin, Germany. Testing laboratory: Experimentelle Toxikologie. Report no.: IC25. Study number: TXST19980177.
A reliability rating of 2 was assigned to this study, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the study was conducted in accordance with generally accepted scientific principles, possibly with incomplete reporting or methodological deficiencies, which do not affect the quality of the relevant results. This study was chosen as the key study.
Steinhaeuser, K. G., W. Amann, A. Spaeth, and A. Polenz. (1985). Investigations on the Aquatic Toxicity of Organotin Compounds. Vom Wasser 65:203-214.
A reliability rating of 4 was assigned to this study, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the study does not give sufficient experimental details and is therefore of reduced reliability. Result:The reported EC50 of Daphnia magna exposed to dibutyltin dilaurate is 0.660 mg/L (660 ppb)

Additional information

On the basis of TOC analysis an EC50-value (48 h) for di-n-butyltin dilaurate was estimated to be between 1.9 and 3.8 mg/L. The highest concentration with no effects was 1.9 mg/L. However, on the basis of concomitant tin analysis, the EC50/48 hours was < 1 mg/L. Di-n-butyltin dilaurate is of high acute toxicity to Daphnia.
