Description of key information

The following studies have been submitted to address the water solubility end point:
Walker JA & White DF (2010). Determination of water Solubility and Partition Coefficient (n-OCTANOL/WATER). Testing Laboratory: Harlan Laboratories Limited, Shardlow Business Park, Shardlow, Derbyshire, DE72 2GD, UK. Report Number: 3109/0041. Owner Company: Organo Tin REACH Consortium, c/o ReachCentrum, Avenue E. Van Nieuwenhuyse 6, B-1160, Brussels, BELGIUM
Schilt et al (2005) Dibutyltin di-laurate (DBTL, CAS # 77-58-7): Solubility and hydrolysis. TNO Report V6140 final, 10 February 2005
Walker JA & White DF (2010) has been allocated a Klimisch score of 1 and is considered to be the key study. Schilt et al (2005) has been conducted in line with sound scientific principles and to GLP and has been allocated a Klimisch score of 2.
The water solubility of the test item has been determined to be less than or equal to 1.43 x 10^-3 g/l of solution at 20.0 ± 0.5ºC, using the flask method, designed to be compatible with Method 105 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995.
The preliminary water solubility test indicated that the column elution method should have been performed as the solubility was less than 1 x 10-2g/l. However, due to the physical nature of the test item, it was not possible to use this method; experience has shown that liquid test items coated onto glass beads cause these beads to adhere together forming a plug within the column and thus preventing water circulation.
The following information is available for this endpoint:

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
1.43 mg/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility ≤1.43mg/l at the temperature of 20.0 ºC

A reliability rating of 1 was assigned to the key study, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the study was conducted in accordance with recognised guidelines and GLP.

The following information is also available for this endpoint:

Schilt et al (2005) Dibutyltin di-laurate (DBTL, CAS # 77-58-7): Solubility and hydrolysis. TNO Report V6140 final, 10 February 2005.

This study has been conducted in line with sound scientific principles and to GLP and has been allocated a Klimisch score of 2.

Result: The solubility was estimated as 0.07 mg/L (at 20 ºC) and 0.21 mg/L (at 40 ºC).
