Description of key information
Bains et al, 1976, was conducted on the larvae of the Khapra beetle. Khapra larvae were exposed in fumigated grain for 7 days at different depths to the source of fumigation. After 7 days the larvae were assessed for mortality. An LD50 value of 143.9g/m3 was set for exposure to the substance in fumigation at 16-19.5ºC.
Critchley, 1972, was conducted as a field study, where the soil was injected with the test substance, plowed and leveled, two weeks after treatment an observation period of 8 weeks was conducted to record numbers of caribidae beetles in the soil. Although Critchley, 1972, provides no quanitied result but does report that the larvae of caribidae were more suseptible to the toxic effects of the substance than the adult beetles. This result provides additional support for the reliability of Bains et al, 1976.

A weight of evidence approach was adopted for this endpoint. Bains et al, 1976, was awarded a reliability score of 2 as the study was well documented and peer-reviewed. As no guideline was followed the reliability was confirmed as 2. Critchley, 1972, was awarded a reliability score of 4 as insufficient data on test methodologies and results was reported in the available report.
