CALIBRATION
Literature value for surface tension of water at 21 °C = 72.58 mN/m
Therefore Φb = 72.58 mN/m / 73.0 mN/m
= 0.99425
TEST SUBSTANCE
Surface tension readings for the test solutions are given in Table 1.
Surface tension of the blank solution was 71.5 mN/m showing that the test procedure has no significant effect on the surface tension of the water.
Test solution surface tension corrected for calibration factor:
= 65.0 mN/m x 0.99425
= 64.6 mN/m

Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- Evidence suggests that DMBC does not exist in aqueous media, being converted instantly to its acid. DMBC cannot therefore affect the surface tension of the water.
Conversely dimethylbenzoic acid has been found to affect the surface tension of water. A 90 % saturated aqueous solution showed a surface tension of 64.6 mN/m compared to that of distilled water, 73.0 mN/m (at 21 °C). - Executive summary:
A test to calculate the surface tenstion of DMBC was conducted in accordance with EU method A5. The surface tension was determined using the harmoised ring method.
DMBC cannot cause any significant effect on the surface tension of water but a 90 % saturated aqueous solution of its hydrolysis product has been found to possess a surface tension value of 64.6 mN/m at 21 °C.
