The reference item sodium benzoate was sufficiently
degraded to 83% after 14 days and to 86% after 28 days
of incubation, thus confirming the suitability of the aerobic
activated sludge inoculum used.
In the toxicity control containing both, the test item and
the reference item sodium benzoate, 77% (ThODNH4)
biodegradation was noted within 14 days and 82%
(ThODNH4) biodegradation after 28 days of incubation
(67% and 71% based on ThODNO3). According to the
test guidelines, the test item can be assumed to be not
inhibitory to the aerobic activated sludge microorganisms
because degradation was >25% within 14 days.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- yes
- Interpretation of results:
- readily biodegradable
- Conclusions:
- 2-Methoxyethylcyanoacetate is considered to be readily biodegradable based on ThODNH4 / ThODNO3.
- Executive summary:
The test item 2-Methoxyethylcyanoacetate contains
nitrogen; therefore the evaluation of biodegradation has
to be based ThODNH4 and ThODNO3. The criterion for
ready biodegradability under the conditions of a manometric
respirometry test is the 10-day window, describing
the period between reaching at least 10% degradation
and 60% degradation. This period should not exceed
10 days.
The mean biodegradation of 10% of 2-
Methoxyethylcyanoacetate was reached at day 3
(ThODNH4) and at day 4 (ThODNO3). At the end of the
10-day window at day 13 and day 14, the degradation of
2-Methoxyethylcyanoacetate was 109% (ThODNH4) and
84% (ThODNO3) and therefore the 10 day window criterion
was passed. The mean biodegradation at test end
after 28 days was 115% (ThODNH4) and 86% (ThODNO3).
Therefore, 2-Methoxyethylcyanoacetate is considered to
be readily biodegradable based on ThODNH4 / ThODNO3.
