Description of key information
A 32-day flow through test according to guidance OECD 210 was performed to determine the long-term toxicity to fish. Embryos were exposed to 0.60, 1.1, 1.9, 3.5, 6.3 μg/L. Samples taken from stock solutions in DMSO used in the preparation of test solutions were analysed. The analysed concentrations were at 81-117% relative to the target concentrations, indicating proper preparation of the stocks. Based on these results, the effect parameters were based on analytically confirmed concentrations.
The overall survival of embryos at the end of hatching was between 97 and 100% in all groups. No statistically significant differences in the embryonic survival were observed at any of test concentrations when compared to the pooled control.
The mean post-hatch larval survival was 96 and 97% for the blank control and the solvent control, respectively. The post-hatch survival in the test groups ranged between 91 and 97%. No statistically significant differences were observed in the larval survival at any of test concentrations when compared to the pooled control.
Statistical analyses indicated that body weight and length was not statistically different from the pooled control at test concentrations up to and including the highest test concentration. In conclusion, under the conditions of the present study Pigment Orange 5 did not affect embryonic survival, larval survival, and growth at the highest concentration of 6.3 μg/L (NOEC).
All the acceptability criteria were met and therefore the study was considered to be valid.
