Description of key information
The substance, triethoxy(octyl)silane has flash point of 45°C to approximately 109°C at 1013 hPa, therefore it is classified as follows
• Is not flammable (based on flash point values of 82-109°C at 1013 hPa and boiling point 259.6°C at 1013 hPa)
• Is flammable (based on a flash point of 45°C at 1013 hPa and boiling point 259.6°C at 1013 hPa)
• In contact with water does not emit a flammable gas based on chemical structure
• Is not pyrophoric based on chemical structure
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The flammability of liquids is assessed on the basis of flash point.
There is no indication on the basis of chemical structure and experience in handling and use that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air) or flammable in contact with water.
Therefore, in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, there is no need to conduct further flammability testing.
A Lower Explosion Limit (LEL) of 0.3 - 0.5% and an Upper Explosion Limit (UEL) of >13.5% was determined for the substance using a bomb method in accordance with DIN EN 1839.
In Haas 2012, sustained combustibility study was conducted for the substance in accordance with ISO 9038 test method and in compliance with a known quality system (ISO 9001:2008). Value of >110°C at 1013 hPa was determined for the registered substance. However, no interpretation of the result was indicated in the study report and as such, the result has not been considered further.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Flammability of liquid:
The submission substance, triethoxy(octyl)silane has flash point values of in the range of 45°C, 82°C, 100°C and approximately 109°C with a measured boiling point of 259.6°C at 1013 hPa.
Therefore, the substance is classified for flammability of liquid as follows:
The flash point of 45°C at 1013 hPa indicates that the registered substance should be classified as:

The flash point values of 82°C, 100°C and approximately 109°C indicate that the substance should not be classified for flammability.
Flammability in contact with air:
There is no evidence to suggest that the submission substance should be classified for this hazard on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
Flammability in contact with water:
There is no evidence to suggest that the submission substance should be classified for flammability in contact with water on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
