Additional information

Two studies explored the possible effects of FR-245 on sediment organisms (Chronomus riparius and Lumbriculus variegatus).

1. The effects of sediment-incorporated FR-245 was investigated in the midge,Chronomus riparius,during 28-day exposure period under static conditions. The measured endpoints of the test were total number of adults emerged and the developmental time.

The 28-Day EC50 value based on percent emergence of midges, (Chironomus riparius) > exposed to sediment-incorporated FR-245, was >1136 mg a.i./Kg dry weight sediment, the highest concentration tested. There were no treatment-related effects observed on mean development times, mean emergence ratios or mean development rates in any of the treatment groups. Therefore, the 28-Day LOEC was > 1136 mg a.i./Kg and the NOEC was 1136 mg a.i./Kg.

2. The influence of FR-245 on the development of the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus was assessed in a static dose-response test.

Lumbriculus variegatus were exposed for 28 days to assess the impact on reproduction and biomass adult worms. The worms were exposed in a sediment-water system containing the test item at various concentrations under defined conditions. Therefore, the sediment were spiked with the test item to simulate the presence of FR-245 in the sediment.

The endpoints of the study were the total number of living individuals per replicate and their biomass. The used method of application is recommended by the test guidelines.

The 28-day EC50 was calculated to be > 100 mg test item/kg for both total number of worms and weight. The 28-day NOEC and the LOEC were determined to be 100 and > 100 mg test item/kg for total number of worms and weight, respectively. For growth rate based on number of worms and biomass a statistically NOEC was calculated to be 100 mg test item/kg and the LOEC was >100 mg test item/kg).

Lumbriculus variegatus was found to be more sensitive species. Therefore, the NOEC and EC50 derived for this organism were taken to Chemical Safety assessment.
