Based on the test results, the substance could be considered as not highly adsorptive, that indicates that soil and sediment are not expected to be the main target compartments for exposure assessment.

The substance is synthetized then separated by centrifugation at one manufacturing site. On this site, the substance is directly used for synthesis of an organic peroxide. Consequently, a,a,a',a'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-a,a'-diol is not marketed.

However, it should be noted chemicals could reach the soil via several routes:

1.  Application of sewage sludge in agriculture.

The building where the substance a,a,a',a'-tetramethylxylene-a,a-diol is manufactured is connected to the sewage treatment plant based on the manufacturing site. Thus the substance is treated with other substances in the dedicated sewage treatment plant. The activated sludge stemmed from the sewage treatment plant are then extracted. Finally, the sludge are treated as chemical waste and they. are not spread.

As a consequence, we can conclude that soil is not exposed to the substance via the application of sewage sludge in agriculture.

 

 2. Direct application of chemicals.

Based on the internal use of the substance, as an intermediate, we can consider that there is no direct application of the substance on the soil compartment.

 

3. Deposition from the atmosphere.

Deposition from the atmospheric compartment involves volatilization, vaporization or direct release of a considered substance into the atmosphere.

During the manufacture, the transport of the substance is done by pipe, screw conveyors and gravity.

Indeed, the substance is synthetized then separated by centrifugation. The transfer to centrifugator is done by closed pipe.

The substance is manufactured, and then used in the synthesis of an organic peroxide.

Occasionally, the substance can be temporarily stored in big-bags in the building, the substance is then also conveyed by pipe, screw, or gravity to process tanks inside the building.

Hence, during these steps, there is no environmental exposure.

The maintenance operations are carried out according to the operating procedures or instructions established by the management staff according to the type of intervention to be performed.

The cleaning is done by washing, then the liquid waste are collected and treated to the waste water treatment plant. And the solid waste are packed in pails and disposed off.

 

As result, there is no emission of the substance in soil during the manufacturing, the storage or the transfer inside the manufacturing site.

Based on these arguments no exposure of soil is expected.
