Experimental data on the toxicity of 1,2-propanediamine (CAS 78-90-0) to freshwater algae are not available. A read-across was performed to the source substance 1,3-propanediamine (CAS 109-76-2) as data are available for Desmodesmus subspicatus using not-pH-adjusted and pH-adjusted test solutions. The 72-h ErC50 of 1,3-propanediamine was determined to be 175.1 mg/L and the 72-h ErC10 was found to be 126.8 mg/L (nom., not pH-adjusted). These values were re-calculated according to OECD TG 201 using ToxRat Pro (v2.09). After pH-adjustment, the 72-h NOErC was ≥ 500 mg/L, which was the highest tested concentration (BASF AG, 1990; report no. 2/0498/89 and 2/w498/89).

It can be concluded that 1,2-propanediamine is with high probability acutely not harmful to algae. Long-term effects are not to be expected.
