Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

In an toxicity study to fresh-water algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus), the LC50 or EbC50 was 29 mg/l, as determined analytically. The dose levels tested were 0, 0.21, 0.72, 2.1, 6.3, 19.4, and 63.4 mg/l, and the exposure period was 72 hours. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 201.
The EbC50 was determined based on the growth rate of algae (number of cells).
The result shows that TGIC has a moderately toxic potential towards fresh-water algae.
No salt-water algae was tested as TGIC is not expected to be present in salt water in significant concentraions.

EC50 for freshwater algae:
29 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
6.3 mg/L

Additional information

In the short term algal study with the fresh water algae Scenedesmus subspicatus over a period of 72 hours, the LC50 (or EbC50) was 29 mg/l based on analytically determined concentrations. In the same study the NOEC was 6.3 mg/l.

Thus, TGIC is minimally to moderately toxic to green algae.

Salt-water algae have not been tested as the concentration of TGIC in salt water is expected to be extremely low.

As TGIC is hydrolized to the triol within a short period of time no long-term effects are expected .
